Chinatown

Vancouver - British Columbia - CANADA

Elements of history

Just steps east of the Millenium Gate on Pender is Shanghai Alley. Go south a few more steps and you will find a replica of the Han Dynasty Bell from Guangzhou. It is a gift to the citizens of Vancouver from its sister city of Guangzhou.

As stated on the information provided, the bell "...is a replica of one unearthed in 1983 during the excavation for a major hotel in central Guangzhou. The original bell which dates back over two millenia is greatly symbolic of the history of settlement in both cities. For Guangzhou, the bell confirms the age of urban settlement in the Pearl River delta. For Vancouver it marks the location of the first Chinese settlement in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia."

Beside the bell are a number of displays well worth visiting and viewing dealing with various historical elements as shown.

On Pender Street across from the entrance to Shanghai Alley is this mural also dealing with the history of the Chinese community within the context of Vancouver and the Province of British Columbia. It is worthy of viewing.
